Zacatecas, México, signs in the city.

Store signs are mostly painted on the concrete stucco above the shop entrance.

Some are funny, odd, interesting, so I decided to share them.

Upstairs there is a bar with traditional or revolutionary singers. That's what a Peña is. It's called La Toma probably in honor of the taking of Zacatecas at the beginning of the revolution. But "La Toma" can also mean, the drink or the drinker. Interesting name for a bar.
Moving right along is this restaurant whose name means the gulper.
In the wilds of Zacatecas I have found... Optimus Prime!
This is a place where you can pay your bills. It's not the power company per se, but it is authorized to take and validate payments. La Canija Lagartija. Now, how do I translate that? Canija, or canijo means somebody who is very good at turning something to good advantage. Cany might be a translation, but it has a small fillip of not very ethical conduct added in. So, the Cany Lizard who might cheat you if you aren't careful. But the name is very alliterative.
Garbage cans are posted every block or two in this city. They are cleaned regularly and the streets are quite clean.
Elaborate 18th century archway to the tree lined street of the Alameda. Tattoo Tony... I've never seen him open, though there are a fair number of tattoos to be seen. But they're called Tatuajes. Somebody working to get the snob appeal.
Ah, yes, The National System for the individual identification of cattle. The original building has been restored and is in use for other purposes. I'll post that picture in my "Not orthagonal or parallelogram streets," photojournal.
Dear me, Frederick International, the support garments to mold your figure.
It's a Gazebo.
I have no idea what this is, but at a guess it's a dance club. On the other hand my tutor told me she thinks it's a crematorium. It would fit with the pun. So far no conclusions.

The name is a vary complex triple sense play on words. Purgatory is often portrayed as a place where devils poke and prod people to move (dance). That's only one letter off the sign. And pulgas are fleas and hop and jump and -- Dance... A torio is a suffix that makes a word turn into the place people go to. I'll have to make more inquiries.

Pawn shop, offers 60% of the value of the goods offered and has a bank teller inside as well.
K isn't a letter in the spanish language. Anything starting with a K is a loan word. I looked at this for minutes trying to discern what it meant. I fianlly realized it wasn't a loan word, it was a straightforward letter substitution. Carnes is meat. It's a restaurant serving meat dripping with juices.
Poder Judicial del Estado Judicial power of the state, department of historical juridical litigation. And on the wrought iron grill, a Se Vende (for sale) sign.
Harlequin's library. The translated romances are quite popular.
The little frog who is sexy. On a Monday it would have been open and showing off light little dresses.
El Canario Feliz The happy Canary, since gone out of business. It sold anything you'd want to have a bird in the home. I guess they aren't happy canaries anymore.
